The 15th year of DesignPhiladelphia marks the launch of the annual exhibition One Thing, which offers all designers the opportunity to redesign and reimagine everyday objects. Our inaugural “one thing” is the ice cream scoop. Originally called the “Ice Cream Mold and Disher”, the ice cream scoop was invented by Alfred L. Cralle at the end of the 19th century when Cralle noticed servers having trouble with the ice cream sticking to serving spoons at a hotel and drugstore where he worked as a porter. With creative rethinking, participating designers will transform this seemingly mundane tool into an object of contemplation. Housed in the Center for Architecture and Design at 1218 Arch Street, One Thing will highlight designers working across and in-between design disciplines, revealing how one object can prompt extremely diverse results.
